As of late 2022, Roman Abramovich’s personal fortune shrank by half. Therefore, he has lost much more than other Russian billionaires.

Bloomberg estimated his wealth at $7.8 billion at the end of 2022. A significant share of this amount is illiquid or inaccessible to the Russian entrepreneur because of international sanctions. He is also unable to benefit from his private jet and superyacht, not to mention the restricted access to some of his real estate properties.

As Bloomberg Billionaires Index suggests, the wealthiest Russians lost at least $95 billion in 2022.

Roman Abramovich is best known as the former owner of the Chelsea Football Club, which he ran for 19 years. After Russia began the full-scale war in Ukraine, the businessmen sold the club. The negotiations took him three months and involved 12 potential buyers, concluding in the club’s acquisition by American investor Todd Boehly’s consortium. Boehly purchased the club for 4.25 billion pounds.

However, in line with the contract, Abramovich did not profit from the deal because the billionaire’s assets remain frozen and in control of the British government. The amount will be donated to Ukraine for humanitarian purposes.

Besides, the sanctions imposed on Abramovich prevented Chelsea from selling or buying players or renewing their contracts. After the sale, the club’s restrictions were lifted.
